FUNCTION OF
IRON (Fe) IN AGRICULTURE
1. As a constituent of enzyme systems which bring about oxidation, reduction in the plants, it regulates respiration, photosynthesis reduction of nitrates and sulphate.
2. It is essential for cell division and the synthesis of protein contained in the chloroplast.
3. Influence the formation of some growth harmonies in the plants.
4. Helpful in reproduction of certain plants.
5. It is a constituent of several enzyme system which regulate various metabolic reactions in the plant.
Deficiency symptoms of Ferrous/ Iron
A deficiency of Fe shows up first in young leaves, the leaves develop an interveinal chlorosis which progress rapidly on entire leaf surface. In severe cases the leaves turn into entirely white colour.
The Fe deficiency is most frequently observed in crops growing on Calcareous or Alkaline soils The crops which are highly sensitive to Fe deficiency are : Sorghum, Corn, Soybean, Bushbeans, Strawberries, Avocado, Vegetable crops and many ornaments.
Amelioration Technique
Apply ferrous sulphate from 10 to 12 kg per hectare in basal dose. However, the quantity can be increased in iron intensive crop like sugarcane. Foliar spray of 2% ferrous sulphate solution added with 1% lime or 4% urea is usually sufficient to alleviate mild deficiency. However, several application at 7 to 14 days may be needed to remedy more severe ferrous deficiency.
