FUNCTION OF
BORON (B) IN PLANTS
1. Boron is essential for germination of pollen grains and growth of pollen tubes.
2. Boron is essential for seed and cell wall formation and it plays an important role in the development and growth of new cells.
3. Help in absorption of nitrogen.
4. Boron forms sugar/borate complexes associated with sugar translocation.
5. Boron is important in protein synthesis.
6. Absorption of salt and Harmon movement in the plant.
7. Regulation of Carbohydrate metabolism.
Deficiency symptoms of Boron
Boron deficiency is most widespread Micronutrient deficiency in many fruits, Vegetables and field crops. It appears in form of thickened, wilted or curled leaves and water soaked petiole. Discoloration, cracking or rotting of fruits, tubers or roots may appear. The breakdown of internal tissues in root crops gives rise to darkened areas referred as to brown hearts or black heart disease.
